Temples & Tombs |
In the morning we cross the Nile to visit the Valley of the Kings.
We then take the path up to the ridge beneath the sacred mountain
of Meretseger where the most breath taking Panorama in Egypt is to
be found. Next we descend to Deir El Medina to visit the sunningly
illustrated Tombs of Sennedjem & Anherkau. Our afternoon
sightseeing takes up to Karnak Temple for an peaceful wander
around the largest sacred precinct in the world.

In search of Horus
|
An early start sees us heading south in our fleet of four-wheel
drive vehicles. On the way we will be stopping off at the early
18th Dynasty tombs of El Kab. Then having visited the temple of
Horus at Edfu, we strike out eastwards into the desert along the
road to Mersa Alam. Our first camp site is located at the small
rock-cut temple of Seti I in the Wadi Mia. There covering the
sandstone cliffs around the temple, are remarkable rock drawings
dating from the Predynastic era, while our bedouin guide setup
camp and prepare a hot dinner, take the opportunity to explore the
site and examine the petroglyphs.

In the Winkler's Footsteps
|
Today we are heading deeper into the high mountains of the Eastern
Desert in search of Hans winkler's "Site 26" locatedin the Wadi
Mineh, here we will make our second camp after inspecting the
inscriptions in the Wadi. The most interesting of these are rock
drawings of the large high-proud boats and the figures of their
Predynastic chieftains. This graffiti represents the earliest
archaeological record we have for the ancestors of the 1st.
Dynasty Pharaohs.
The big question is who were they and where did they come from?

Beneath the Stars
|
Again we head off through the mountains, this time along the
ancient camel trail which leads down to the ancient port of
Berenike, situated on the Red Sea coast. But we will be heading in
the opposite direction - northwest towards the vast open plain of
the Wadi Zeidun. On our way we will locate winkler's 'Site 18'
before camping for our third beneath the stars.

To the Red Sea
|
Our final day in the desert is spent investigating the ancient
schist quarries and gold mines of the Wadi Hammamat. After lunch
near the rock carving of the "Genealogy Of the Royal Architects"
we head due east to the Red Sea and then north along the coast
road to Hurghada. Check into the 1st class Intercontinental Hotel
for two nights. Time for a long hot bath and cool beer after an
extraordinary three days of desert exploration and adventure.

Sun, Sea and Sand
|
Enjoy a well-earned day on the beach, or take a snooze by the
hotel pool or perhaps you may have the energy left for some
underwater diving in the remarkable waters of the Red Sea. What
ever you decide to do, you should give yourself a part on the
back. After all, there are very few travelers who can claim to
have crossed the Eastern Desert through some of the most desolate
terrain on Earth - and that includes 99% of the world's
Egyptologists !
